Learning Outcomes 6 & 7

  • Evaluate technology resources to facilitate effective assessment and evaluation

  • Utilize technology to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings

In this lesson, students will rely on previously acquired skills and prior knowledge to create a digital story. Students will have a selection of platforms appealing to all learning types, for students to utilize for creating their digital storyboard. Storyboards include options for visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learning styles (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2015).

Objective

After completing the lesson, the student will be able to design and author a digital story that will illustrate their findings from investigating the details of a historical event or character that offers significance to the student.

Group Instruction:

Learners tell stories relevant to prior class lessons that have covered various historical figures. Students will draw on an experience to relate to the chosen historical figure. A short overview and description will be communicated for the learner to understand digital storytelling. The student can incorporate audio, visuals, in addition to the text of the story that is created (Horton, 2012).

Storytelling helps transform facts into meaningful and emotional context for the learner to relate and demonstrate a deeper connection is revealing a high level of thinking. Creating digital stories all allows students to communicate in a creative and innovative manner (Porter, 2015).

Activities

Research: The student will primarily draw from prior knowledge; a list of recourses will be provided for additional research performed to clarify specifics and details. Students will select at least three resources from the list provided. A list of databases and resources will be given to help guide the research process. This activity connects learner to the world of knowledge that is essential in navigating to pursue success in life (Horton, 2012). During this step, teacher and student teacher will meet with the student for feedback and guidance.

Digital Storytelling

The process of creating digital stories provides an opportunity for students to practice and master existing knowledge that is relevant for success in the 21st-century. To effectively tell a story, learners will utilize creative thinking, effective communication, higher-order thinking, information literacy, visual and sound literacy, and project management skills (Porter, 2015).

Digital Storytelling Resources:

Recommendation: Select the platform that best fits your learning style, then take some time to watch the different example storyboards published for viewing.

Review Kathy Schrock’s Guide To Everything and refer to mind mapping tools such as MindMeister to help brainstorm and map out your story.

Closure: (Analyze practice)

Break back into groups. The activity will be concluded with the student addressing ‘So What?’

  • Discuss the importance and contribution seen today

  • Describe what has been learned from events/decisions made (Porter, 2015).

In groups, learners will also discuss alternative morals for classmate’s story (Horton, 2012).
